The woman started her non-profit hairdressing salon in 2015 after she was laid off from the oil industry.

So when I lost my job,” Goodson said, “I knew immediately that I had to start a charity.”

Barbara’s husband was surprised that she was going to do all these haircuts and not get paid for them.

But the woman assured him she’ll be fine.

Goodson had obtained her barber license in 1978 and kept it active. 37 years later she had an opportunity to reach people in desperate need of her services.

It has been the most rewarding experience of my life

At first Barbara worked in basements, stairwells and small rooms. All she needed was an electrical outlet and a chair.

She started visiting homeless shelters, women’s and men’s shelters and special-needs facilities.

“I’ve been allowed to touch thousands of people’s lives in a positive way,” Goodson said.

“It has been the most rewarding experience of my life.”

But Barbara wanted to to travel to different Houston shelters to help everybody struggling to get back on their feet and to help even larger number of under-privileged. So she needed grants to buy mobile hairdresser salon.

The first organization to recognize the impact of what Barbara was doing  was United Ways. She received initial $5000 toward this purchase, and another $23,000 to finish the project all funded by grants.

Barbara bought an RV and converted it into a mobile hair unit, so people could het the love from sitting in her chair.

“It can really change your mentality about certain things, especially when you are way down, you made a mistake and you’re trying to come back up in life”,  said David Joseph, who came to get his haircut.

If it improves their life, if it makes them feel better about themselves

Some of Barbara’s clients slept under a bridge the night before, some were abandoned by family or live with mental illness.

Many of them even cried in her barber chair, because never in life they had received so much care.
