Two years ago Poteau Police Officer Jody Thompson got a call about child abuse by chance. He was off duty but could not refuse and rescued an eight year old boy.
Today that boy as well as his sister are his adoptive children.
That day Thompson was off duty
He drove his partner to the Poteau Police Department when he heard a call about a boy being physically abused. The man responded without hesitation as the case was not new to him.
16 years before, Thompson was an investigator of dozens of kids’ abuse cases.
When Jody arrived, he saw a horrific scene
A severely malnourished boy was sitting in trash can filled with cold water. He was covered in bruises entirely, with his hands and feet tied with a rope. He weighed only 61 pounds,
a critically low weight for the boy of his age.
Jody took the boy, named John, to the hospital and spent all night by his side
The family had already had two biological 15-year old and 8-year-old sons andthe officer knew John would be his third son.
“I knew at that moment the only time I would be satisfied and sure that he was safe is if he was with me,” he told CBS news.
The next day Thomson filled an appeal to be his foster parent
He contacted the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and a few days later he brought John home. The family supported Jody and warmly welcomed a new member.
Surprisingly, two days later Thompson learned his wife was pregnant with their third biological son!
Seven months later, the family faced another extraordinary twist
DHS called the Thompsons to tell that John’s mother had given birth to a girl while in prison. They asked if they would like to foster her.
Never in my life did I dream of having a large family, but God had different plans
Next day the family rushed to the hospital and brought their a-day-old daughter home.
Thompson formally adopted John in 2015
His biological parents relinquished their parental rights. But they refused to relinquish their rights for the girl. The Thomsons were determined to go all the way so after six months of lengthy jury trial the family formally adopted Paizley in February 2016.
There are five children in the Thompsons family now. And they all are happy for such an incredible twist of fate.
“Never in my life did I dream of having a large family, but God had different plans and so here we are. And I’m loving it all,” Jody says.
