Heather Duckworth came home to find 15 pairs of shoes on her porch. The mom of five found the scene so poignant that it got her to thinking about how parents feel when children grow up.
“These shoes mean that I have a house full of kids… These shoes are a sure sign that it is summer and school is out,” Duckworth wrote.
They also meant something else – ‘a wave of sadness’ as she realized this summer is the last one of the ‘18 summers with your kids’.
“I am on number 18 with mine. This realization tugs at my heart and makes me wonder how 18 summers went by so quickly,” Heather thought.
The woman could not contain her emotion:
“Big changes are happening around here – for me and all these kids in my house. My heart knows it and feels it and that’s why the sight of these shoes has me feeling a little sentimental. I know that after this summer, things will never be the same again.”
Heather realized that her kids’ departure and although her brain accepted it, her heart hurt:
“All of these shoes might not find their way back home next summer as life takes them on new adventures.”
She then perfectly summed up what a parent could do – enjoy that very moment and not “not let that dark cloud of sadness swallow” them up.
